I could see it in his eyes. He did not speak a word. He just sat quietly at the corner of the dining table and listening attentively to his wife and daughter-in-law discussing with me on the arrangements for his son's funeral.
I picked it up from the glances he occasionally threw in our direction, that spoke how broken his heart was.
Mr Kua's son succumbed to cancer. This terminal disease has taken away all hopes that he had in this son. The late Mr Kua was a dynamic young man who was blessed with a happy young family and was promisingly ascending up to the pinnacle of his career. So much of life and dreams he had envisioned that would surely turned them into reality, if he was given the time. But God needed him more.
Mrs Kua, the senior, was relating the life story of her son to us while awaiting the arrival of our service crew to transport the remains to Nirvana Memorial Center. The medical support equipment provided by Hospis Malaysia were still intact and we helped to dismantle them with the wife's assistance.
We gave our assurance to Mr Kua that the funeral will be well coordinated and that his wishes to bring some of the ashes back to his hometown in Sarawak will be properly arranged.
We did our best to fulfill our promises by providing a dignified farewell to his son.
After the funeral, we even went back to Mr Kua to help clear some of the medical supplies by sending them back to Hospis Malaysia.
Some of the supplies were expensive and useful, and some were quite heavy and can be physically challenging to the old folks. We thought that this is one of the ways that we could help the parents and pray for the healing to begin very soon.
